We will continue to use the Wonders series, published by McGraw Hill. I really liked using the program last year. The components include a literature anthology textbook, with interesting stories in many different genres, a reading/writing textbook, practice book and close reading book. Students will learn 8 vocabulary words each week, and have a spelling list each week. The series also includes leveled readers and work station activities. Your child can access review games and activities at home. Please encourage them to show you use tools.
A novel study unit will be done sometime in January. Spelling words will correspond to our reading units. An enriched list will be given to students who score 95% or higher on the pretest. The students will begin "Paragraphs of the Week" in October. Our major writing pieces will include expository, persuasive, and personal narrative. Students will be exposed to reading and writing various types of poetry including: haiku, limericks, cinquain, and free verse. We will also work on keeping up on the conventions of language. I've been referred to as, "The Period Police", so assignments handed in without them will need to be fixed! The students get used to this pretty quickly.
