Curriculum News:
Religion: We will finish up Chapter 3 on the 10 Commandments next week. Then I will start a bible unit. The students will practice looking up passages. They will work with their "Bible Team" during this unit. We will also be praying the rosary this month. Please have your child bring a rosary to school. We will say one decade per day, so a rosary a week! If the weather cooperates, we can go outside by the statue of the Blessed Mother to pray!
The students were all trained to become altar servers today. They did a great job! Please fill out the paperwork they should have brought home today. Send it to school by Tuesday, please.
Some students have not been turning in their Mass Reflections. A grade will be posted for religion at the end of the quarter. Missing reflections will lower grades considerably. Please make sure your child turns them in every week. I always send a hard copy home on Thursdays. There is also link to it on my website. Click the religion button, or just write it on a piece of loose leaf paper.

Language Arts: We are finishing up Unit 1 Week 3. There will be no spelling list this week. The students will begin writing their personal narratives this week. We continue to work on basic punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure. They are improving, but some have needed to redo papers due to careless errors in these areas. Remember spelling and vocabulary words can be practiced in the Spelling City website. The students know how to get to it.
We will be burying "dead words" in honor of Halloween, and putting them on a graveyard bulletin board outside our room. I will post a picture on SeeSaw for you to enjoy! We will also be writing a Fall Diamante.

Social Studies: Our Pioneer Journal is due Monday. The students were all given an instruction sheet as well as a rubric. I am looking forward to reading about their day as a pioneer child! As soon as we finish Chapter 3, we will be ready to begin learning about our first region: The Northeast. During our study, we will memorize the states and capitals of this region, as well as learn about its rich history, climate, land forms, and people.
Science: We have been having so much fun learning about energy this year! We did some amazing performance activities to learn about kinetic and potential energy. Thanks for the comments and "likes" on SeeSaw. Also, thank you for sending the materials to school. We will continue to study different types of energy during the next few weeks. We are exploring our Inspire Connect Ed website. There are differentiated books you can read with your child, as well as simulations, videos and flashcards. The children know how to access these tools. They make learning fun, so ask them to show you how the use them!
Math: We will take the Chapter 2 test Monday. Next, we are on to basic multiplication and division facts. We should get through Chapter 3 fairly quickly. Please have your child practice their facts every night for 10 minutes. They may use the 3rd grade IXL site. They know how to access it! They also know what multiplication time test they are currently working on.
tidbits
Late work lunch:
Late Work Lunch will begin counting on Monday. Remember: 5 accumulated LWLs will result in a Major and an after school detention. Please check your child's assignment notebook every day. Encourage them to listen in class and use their time well. If they do, they should not have much homework.
Field Trip:
If your child has not returned their form and payment, please have it in by Wednesday. This trip is completely outdoors; including lunch. Have your child dress for the weather. They may bring a light, string type backpack and a paper bag lunch labeled with their name and school. Walking shoes are necessary; no sandals or flip flops please. Our chaperones are: Mr. Camara, Mrs. Hug, and Mr. Callender. Please be at school at 8:10.
coins for books:
Thank you to those who already sent in coins for book donations. There is still time to donate. The collection will end on Tuesday.
sock-tober:
The 8th grade class has asked all the students to bring in new socks of any size or color. These will be donated to the needy right here in DuPage County. The project will run through mid October.
Each of your children has written a "Smart Goal" to work on this quarter. These are very simple things such as: not resting your head on your desk during class, or getting right to your assignment notebook when you get in the classroom. Please ask them what their goal is for the quarter. Then periodically, ask them how it is going!
